It does have a strong smell, though not so much if you are using a powdered version and that smell fades during the cooking process. It is often used in place of onion and garlic, so you can adjust by adding a bit more onion and garlic to your dishes as desired. Asafetida is not essential and dishes that call for it will turn out fine if you don't have any. Still, as noted above, I hope you will get a chance to try some. You only need a bit and I have found it truly does enhance the flavour of my food. It rounds out the flavours in dal dishes and also helps digestion.Lisa Turnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17596930753946940084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498332469430544166.post-39977328161225928902012-07-12T12:16:32.395-04:002012-07-12T12:16:32.395-04:00Lisa, I cannot find asafetida in my local markets;...Lisa, I cannot find asafetida in my local markets; they say it stinks and they won't carry it for that reason. What does it add to the dishes where you use it, and will the dishes suffer from NOT using it?naomilovestomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00673059498627876310noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498332469430544166.post-3905297225034903102012-07-12T10:43:56.608-04:002012-07-12T10:43:56.608-04:00This sound perfect for summer Lisa. This sound perfect for summer Lisa.Valerie Harrison (bellini)https://www.blogger.com/profile/10205920305666658534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5498332469430544166.post-86706929571786578052012-07-12T03:36:46.952-04:002012-07-12T03:36:46.952-04:00I have a very similar version on my blog - a Bangl...I have a very similar version on my blog - a Bangladeshi inspired one. You're right, it's a must try. I got hooked on it and make it all the time. Last time I used red lentils and pumpkin which also worked well.Mango Gingerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16649709259581684652noreply@blogger.com
