If you are craving a naturally sweet, easy to make healthy treat that you won't feel guilty indulging in, then you simply must make these fudgy little fruit and nut nibblers that I was inspired to try after seeing Ricki's recipe for Cocoa Nibbles recently. I was especially attracted to the range of possible flavour combinations and accordingly, proceeded to explore my cupboards. The result was even better than expected! Think fat, chocolatey fruit leather, sans artificial sweeter, with a hint of spice. These delightful slices of existential bliss will keep for a week in a covered container in the fridge, but I dare you to resist gobbling them all up after a slight chill. Serves as many as you feel generous enough to share with. This is my contribution to Fat Chefs or Skinny Gourmets, a new food event started by Ivy and Ben focusing on healthy diet food. There is no reason at all to sacrifice taste while paying attention to good nutritional habits.
Cocoa Fruit Treats
2/3 cup of unsalted pistachio nuts
1 cup of moist, dried dates, pitted and chopped
1/4 cup of moist, dried prunes, chopped
1/3 cup of dried cranberries
2 heaping tablespoons of cocoa powder (or carob powder)
2 teaspoons of vanilla
1/2 teaspoon of dried red chili flakes
In a food processor, pulse together the pistachios, dates, prunes, cranberries and cocoa until you have a coarse meal. Add the vanilla, and red chili flakes and process until the mixture forms into thick ball of dough.
Turn the mixture out onto a piece of plastic wrap and using your hands, shape into a roughly 8 inch long dense log. Cover with plastic wrap, roll the log a few more times to compress and chill for a few hours or longer. Cut into 1/2 inch slices.

Oh, wow. Just wow. Those look like little tastes of heaven.
Words do not do these little bites of bliss justice. A MUST TRY!
Lisa, these look amazing!! I often add chili flakes but have never done these with so many fruits--and I LOVE the addition of pistachios! Now I'm going to be making your version next time... !
These sound great! I like the nut and dried fruit combo and the use of the chocolate and chilies!!
Oh wow these sound good! I'm always looking for healthy treats and this is definitely something different. Though I think I'll be leaving out the chili flakes!
These look so great! I just made my own granola bars for the first time and I was thinking of making something with just fruit & nut (like a Lara bar). Love the cocoa in these. Have you ever had that Ficoco spread? It's one of my favorite things ever.
Elly, haven't had that Ficoco spread. Care to share?
Ohh that looks amazing... can diabetic patience eat them... I can make a whole bunch for my dad and father in law then..... awesome lisa.....
Do check my blog too
these look amazingly tempting - I'm pleased to see you had success with adapting these to your cupboard - hope to have a go at these soon
What a wonderful reacipe for a healthy treat. I love using dried fruit and nuts for healthy snacks. These looks lovely. :-)
Wow Lisa....these look amazing and healthy too.will definitely try them
I checked with a diabetic co-worker of mine and yes, these are a fine treat for diabetics.
I get Ficoco at Whole Foods, but I'm sure they have it at other places. The ingredients are basically dried figs, cocoa powder and cane sugar. No doubt easy enough to make on your own (and I might try next time) and so much better than plain ol' jam.
Wow, these are excellent. This is the kind of food we want our children to be eating. Healthy and nutritious, naturally sweetened. Thank you Lisa for submitting this to our event.
I loved these Lisa! they look so good! but don't you need any binding agent like eggs or milk to make the dough? how will it come together? just by the dried fruits?
Mansi, you don't need any binding agent at all. I used moist dried fruit and they came together perfectly. Very easy to make, and very had to resist.
really nice.i love anything chocolatey. i made something similar but with melted chocolate.
need to try this one out
