I've been tagged by Holler for one of the various memes that roam the internet. Due to time constraints and various other distractions, I usually don't bother, even though I appreciate the friendly gesture. Holler is very dear to me however, and since it's about books, I've decided to play along.I am instructed to pick up the nearest book, turn to page 123, find the 5th sentence and then post the next three sentences.
The proletariat are an additional population that, without new opportunities of employment, would never have grown up. The fall in average income occurs simply because great population growth generally involves a greater increase of the poorer, rather than the richer, strata of a population. But it is incorrect to conclude that anybody needs to have become poorer in the process.
F.A Hayek, The Fatal Conceit
Now I am supposed to tag five others. Normally I help kill these things by not tagging anyone, but my curiosity about other people's reading material gets the better of me this time. My choices are Darcey, Lucy, Ricki, Kevin, and Jay.

Fascinating.
You're on. (And off to find this book on Amazon...)
A highly recommended read Lucy! I am seriously tempted to read it all over again once I am finished. But Of Human Action by Ludwig von Mises beckons.
Hi Lisa!
Thanks so much for the tag--I had to smile when I read your sentences (and your response to Lucy's comment)--as I've been hearing about this very theory for the past 11 years from my sweetheart. In fact, Of Human Action is on HIS desk at this very moment; but since he wasn't the one tagged, I'll go and write up my own three sentences!
Having read some works of Von Mises previously, I already know that Of Human Action should end up on your desk next Ricki.
Thank you for doing the meme Lisa :) I thought you might like this one. Shame on you for killing these things! Although I know what you mean, I usually do them out of courtesy for the friend asking. I was very excited the first time I was tagged.
I love this meme. It is so interesting to see what others are reading, and being tempted by their books.
I like this memes, it's sufficiently nerdy for my tastes. I also like that you have F.A. Hayek within arm's reach on your bookshelf, though I've never read that particular book. Yay, you're a nerd too! :)
You may find it silly, but I've given you a bloggie award. I really enjoy your blog, just that much. Check out my 5/03/08 post for a swath of information and compliments.
Wow, interesting Meme Lisa..:D.
