Blueberry and Maple Syrup Oat Smoothie

Blueberry and Maple Syrup Oat Smoothie

In addition to all her lovely recipes, there are many things that I have to thank my fellow vegetarian blogger Holler from Tinned Tomatoes for, not the least of which is that she is such a dear friend even though she's halfway across the world from me. One other thing that I'm grateful to her for is turning me on to the idea of oat smoothies blended with yogurt and fruit. What a terrific way to combine all the proteins, minerals and fiber of oats and yogurt with the vitamins of fruit into a quick, easy, wholesome and delicious pick-me-upper for any time of day!

Holler's blueberry, maple syrup and oat smoothie already inspired me to dabble around with oats, yogurt and a blender to come with my own fermented oat smoothie base to which I added mango and blackberries. It worked out so well that I would consider an overnight room-temperature soaking of one part rolled oats and two parts whole fat yogurt to be a one-size-fits-all base for adding any variation of fruits and sweeteners to make a thoroughly nutritious and digestible oat smoothie. So of course I had to try applying it with Holler's yummy-sounding combination of blueberries and maple syrup. It was absolutely gorgeous, and didn't last long!

Blue berries and maple syrup are a great combination. In the summer I was enjoying fresh blueberries on yogurt with maple syrup. The smoothie sounds really good.

Aww, you are such a lovely friend Lisa and a kind one too! I am glad you liked the smoothie! I am thinking of churning the same mixture in my ice cream maker, come summer. But, it is just too cold just now!

Much love to you Holler. It may not be summer, but your recipes are always inspiring and satisfying.

I really want to try this but am out of town for a week so soaking overnight isn't going to happen til I get back but will be keeping this in mind as I have blueberries in the freezer and apple juice in the fridge so it sounds like a drink for me (and I am curious but wary about oats in drinks!)

This sounds fabulous! I've had soaked oats on their own and I love smoothies with berries (I recently wrote about a smoothie I do with blueberries and hidden spinach if you're interested in trying something different). So this is definitely a must-try for me. I will probably use soymilk or rice milk instead of the yogurt, but otherwise will follow exactly. In fact, I think I'll go right now and start soaking the oats! :) Thanks for this recipe. (Oh, and an ice cream version?? Wow. Can't wait for summer).
